Ledia Runnels' "Mysteries of the Orient"

Year of the Water Dragon!

September 6, 2012

HI EVERYONE!

I’ve been out of the loop for a bit now, busy with the business of writing etc. For those following my book’s progress, it is pretty much decided that the local middle school is using my novel, LEGENDS OF THE HENGEYOKAI, BOOK ONE  TENGU PRINCE as curriculum next April. I’ve been doing fine tune editing to make sure the book is ready for a teacher to read and teach to a class full of sixth graders. This is so exciting!

TENGU PRINCE has a new cover that I hope projects the theme of the story a bit better than the first one did. Also, I am fine-tune-editing book two in the series: CHERRY JEWEL. I hope to have it ready by this October, but a lot is happening now withTENGU PRINCE so not sure if I will find the needed time to spend on CHERRY JEWEL just now. It will be ready by April of next year at the very latest.

I am looking for an agent and plan to attend the Austin Film Festival next month. I have gone twice before and find it an exciting place to meet other writers as well as movers and shakers in the film industry.

Hope all of you are having a fantastic September! I wish all the best for you.

Prologue

SIBLING RIVALRY

Revenge is sweetest

when it is cold and bitter

like ice-capped mountains.

The tree’s skin ripped downward in reddish-pink strips that he dropped absently to the forest floor. The towering evergreens blocked out much of the night sky above where he systematically stripped the bark from the nearest trunk. Breathing in the scented wood, he felt light-headed–intoxicated with madness.

A chilled breeze rustled his robe as he narrowed his eyes toward the clearing beyond where a bonfire crackled and popped. Nearby, black bears, red foxes, cranes and all manner of forest creatures gathered at the foot of a moss-covered throne. Embossed jade ravens-in-flight seemed to glide across the backrest of the king’s chair.

A twig snapped and he turned to see a raccoon dog, its eyes glittering in the moonlight, watching him. Of course it was. That’s what the insignificant did. They watched their betters. They looked up from their lowly places near the dirt, lower than the dirt, and peered out to see what it was like to matter.

Without a second thought, he raised one hand. He felt the tingle of energy and power as a barb flew from the tips of his index finger toward one shining, black eye. The fluffy canine fell instantly to the ground. Writhing in agony, its bushy tail thrashed against the ground.

Ice cold, his hand fell to his side. He could not tolerate nosey creatures. It did not matter what their reasons were for spying. They should learn to keep their wet noses out of his business. It really was that simple.

When he turned back to the festivities, he saw Sojobo, correction, “King” Sojobo walking toward him–hand held up in greeting, a smile on his face.

A shiver of pure hatred tracked down his spine. He would not stand around waiting for his brother to gloat. That was something he could never abide!

Leaves rustled beneath his feet as he spun away in the opposite direction. He strode toward and through the wall of trees that lead into the deepest part of the forest.

He was never fond of his younger brother. Nor had he ever cared for any of them, but the king’s crown was his right as the eldest brother. The tengu should never have taken it from him.

A moment later, he peeked over his shoulder to see Sojobo standing in the same place he had just moments before. Torchlight glowed from behind the newly crowned monarch, making it look as if the sun had fallen into the forest.

The hatred he felt before now burned through his mind. He spun away and sprinted, his body tense as his newly formed wings picked him up and he flew above the cryptomeria forest.

One day he would return. One day he would have his revenge when Sojobo least suspected it. In fact, they would all pay for what they had done this day. The only thing that made any of it bearable was his knowing that when it happened, it would be a slaughter beyond imagining. He would make sure of it.

Blacksmith Munechika (end of the 10th century)...

When the vixen flicked its nine tails toward her, Tomiko was truly terrified. She knew fox spirits possessed magic, though each one had its own special type. She also knew by the number of tails this one possessed it was very old and very powerful.

To climb the sacred mountain carried weighty consequences, of this she had seen all too clearly with appearance of the tengu king. Yet the arrival of the fox spirit made her tremble with dread so terrible she almost lost her footing. It took all her concentration not to trip as she zigzagged through the towering bodies of trees and jumped over the underbrush near her feet.

The fox was following her that was certain, keeping perfect pace with her every movement. Her mind spun with speculation wondering what she could offer the spirit to keep in its good graces, if in fact she was not.

She found little comfort remembering that foxes were messengers of Inari, the benevolent goddess of rice. Though mostly a benign spirit, the fox could also be a seductive trickster as well, never a good sign in any case.

Breathe burned hot in her chest as Tomiko burst through the towering trees into a clearing. But she immediately skidded to a halt beside a pagoda, home to the five elements: earth, wind, fire, air and void that towered five stories from the ground toward its roof that curved upward into the clouds.

Her next step hovered beside one of 2,445 stone steps that led up to the top of the mountain. The path was used only by men, the only ones allowed to climb to the summit where she was told Sanshin Gosaiden Worship Hall of the Three Gods perched.

What made her stop was seeing one of the guardian priests of the shrine standing next to the pagoda. She recognized his attire from others that she had seen from time to time in the village. His hair stood in stiff, white peaks from his head with black tips, also like the other priests. Her knees trembled at sight of the fighting pole tucked crosswise beneath his waist tie-belt.

As if in slow agonizing motion, he turned, his gaze locking into hers. At that moment a terrible sense of danger trapped her in its net.

Amaterasu!” she gasped, slumping to her knees, forehead pressed in subjugation against the damp earth.

She was far more horrified by this human’s appearance than she had been only moments before when she witnessed King Sojobo and the fox spirit. Numb with fear, she waited for the priest’s fighting pole to crack hard against her head. It was what she deserved, of this she knew all too clearly.

At the gruesome image, her stomach lurched promising to release the breakfast of rice and sliced vegetables she had munched for breakfast earlier that morning.

“Did you see him?” The young man’s voice floated, soft on the morning breeze. The sound of it tickled her ear with its gentle, innocent tone.

Part One

TENGU

Prologue

Fists clenched at his side, Magatsu stood behind a tightly packed copse of Cryptomeria spruce that towered over his head. The sharp evergreen scent tingled at his nose as a cool spring breeze blew past.

In the clearing beyond, a group of monstrous bird-like creatures gathered. Long, bulbous noses thrust from bright-red human-like faces, while black feathers covered most of their torso. Folded wings tucked at their sides. They stood upright on claw-like feet.

The bird men gathered around another like them who perched on a throne carved from wood inlaid with precious gemstones: red, green, blue and amber. A crown of Sakai leaves encircled the “king’s” moss green hair.

A twig snapped and Magatsu turned his scowl toward a tanuki whose dark eyes glittered out from a smallish face. Its narrow snout sniffed the air. Pointed ears peaked above dense, earth brown and black fur that covered a round sausage-shaped body on short, stout legs. The raccoon dog’s fluffy tail swished nervously against a tree trunk.

Magatsu sneered and raised one finger toward the pint-sized canine. The next instant a barb shot from his finger’s tip toward one shining, black eye. The tanuki fell instantly to the ground writhing in agony.

Drawing in a breath, Magatsu sniffed with satisfaction, crossing his arms against his chest. He could not tolerate nosey creatures. It did not matter what their reasons for spying. They should learn to keep their wet noses out of his business.

When he turned back to the festivities, King Sojobo walked toward him, his hand held up in greeting, a smile on the other’s face. Magatsu wanted to hurl himself toward his younger brother then tear him limb-from-limb. Since he had no power to bring this about, he spun away in the opposite direction. Leaves rustled beneath his feet as he strode toward and between a wall of trees that lead into the deepest part of the forest.

He refused to stand around waiting for his younger brother to gloat.

A moment later, he glanced over his shoulder to see the king standing just beyond the clearing. Torch light glowed around Sojobo, making it seem as if the sun had fallen into the forest behind him.

The second rush of hatred started as a spasm in the pit of Magatsu’s stomach and worked its way up to scotch his brain. The burning sensation translated to his legs and began to run, his body tense, his fists ready to crush any that dared stand in his path. Before the trees grew too thick for him to do so, he unfurled his newly formed wings. Lifting into the open sky, he flew.

One day he would return and have his revenge when Sojobo least suspected it. In fact, they would all pay for what they did tonight. An image of rotting bodies in a pile with hot flames burning the dead flesh away to the bone the only thing that made this present moment bearable. A slaughter beyond imagining and he would make sure it happened at just the right moment.

Enjoy!
